Providing optimal water levels for each crop at every stage of its cycle requires considering a range of factors and making decisions based on the climatic context. Plants and their productive capacity suffer from both water deficits and excesses; therefore, optimal irrigation is a key factor in premium agriculture.
Just as biotechnology makes our work easier and improves the quality of our crops, there are different precision irrigation devices that allow us to know the existing moisture levels in the soil, which will have a beneficial impact on several aspects.
Through sensors located at various points on the plot, the soil moisture level is analyzed, and electrical conductivity and temperature can also be measured. At regular intervals, these sensors, which are of different types and connection methods, transmit the information to a receiver or directly to the server, which stores the collected data.
This information can also be accessed through mobile applications, further simplifying the work of farmers and technicians, as they can consult it at any time simply by taking their phones out of their pockets. The availability of this data allows for informed decisions regarding the need to irrigate or to stop irrigation to prevent waterlogging.
These sensors complement programmable irrigation systems, offering the ability to program the frequency and duration of irrigation, as well as fertilizer application, among other functions, according to the instructions of the agronomist and the farmer. Equipment already exists that allows irrigation parameters to be programmed via an app, enabling you to activate irrigation urgently or reprogram it if moisture sensors or weather conditions indicate it is necessary.
These devices are becoming very widespread, and one of the main benefits is the considerable water savings achieved, as well as saving the farmer's time, since they can conveniently manage irrigation from their pocket, making decisions with greater accuracy.
