That is why from EDYPRO We wanted to offer practical workshops on carob tree pruning. This training was divided into two parts: formative pruning and pruning of mature carob trees. 

During the first part of this practical session, our CEO and technical director, Vicente Puchol, explained the ideal structure for the carob tree, geared towards a new agricultural model. The correct tree configuration will result in a significant increase in production, a substantial reduction in annual pruning costs, and will prevent alternate bearing.

Participants were able to learn and analyze on-site how to interpret and carry out the correct tree training through practice on different specimens that were discussed.

Regarding pruning mature carob trees, which have not been pruned for years, Puchol emphasized that it is a different technique than that used in shaping. “What is, is what it is; we have to interpret the tree to identify what we should leave and what we should remove to get to where we want it to be,” he explained. 

Our technical director warned that caution is necessary with these types of trees, given the size of the branches. It is preferable to prune from top to bottom to avoid danger. Pruning should also be avoided on windy days.

To illustrate this technique, attendees witnessed the pruning of a large, monumental carob tree. After the intervention, the tree was well-defined and, after the summer, will have vigorous new growth.
